A discussion on vacation

I’ve been thinking a lot about vacation today.  With a 3yo and a 6yo our options are limited.  With a incredibly small budget we are limited even further.  We have a 2 week window of time when nobody is in school(including dh) and before day camp begins.  Since we don’t do the tourist thing very well I’ve been trying to come up with alternatives.  I stumbled across something that seems like it would be a neat way to enhance a driving trip.  It’s called Geocaching.  The idea is that somone leaves a log book and, usually, some type of item in a location.  The GPS coordinates are then logged on the geocaching website.  So with information from the website and a gps unit you go and hunt down the secret spot.  There are 40 of these spots within 5 miles of my house. 

That gives us some activity on the trip but does not solve the problem of where to go.  Do we go it alone or stay with friends?  Do we go North or South?  Someplace new or an old favorite?  On the shore or inland?

I’m sort of in the mood for camping except I don’t know about tenting it.  I wish we had a) a pop-up camper and b)a vehicle to tow it.  But we don’t, so that settles that.  I’m thinking that our options are as follows:

1. Lake Ontario - friends have vacation home there
2. Deleware/Maryland - stay with a cousin
3. Swans Island, ME - friends of family live here
4. Rent a cabin - could be any number of locations on the east coast
5. Forget the whole thing and treat ourselves to something we can use all year round.

Lots of years we have opted for #5  I think this year, though, we really need the time away.  We may do #1 at another time during the summer with the family that owns the house.  So the plans are developing.

I’m going to shop for a gps unit.  The Geocaching thing sounds like a fun way to get us out of the house and doing something interesting together as a family.

As far as knitting goes, I finished one Regia Bamboo sock, am coming to the end of the Radiance Lace Headband, and am struggling through the i-cord for the booga bag.  Pictures tomorrow, I hope.  New yarn from [Webs] was shipped yesterday, so I have that to look forward to either tomorrow or Friday, yay!
